I’ve been going to the same places in my dreams since i was a child

My coastal town is always foggy — and is a small New Deal downtown structure

When I was a kid, I remember dreaming about a Costco where everything was organized by color. If you needed grapes, you went to the purple section (or green, I suppose). If you needed a blue sweater, you went to the blue section and had to find it surrounded by everything else blue. Pens, purses, Gatorade. Whatever was that color was there. The system was total, and no one questioned it. There was one exception, however: puzzles. They had a section of their own in the middle of the store, as if the building had been completely arranged around them. After going to this weird warehouse store, I continued to go back. And it was always the same.

I told my mom and my sister about it in the car on the way to school. They were my captive audience, and they weren’t pleased about it. At first they didn’t believe me. Over the years, that settled into something closer to concern. Maybe I was just a strange kid with a strange imagination.

But, the store didn’t stay a one-off. The dream world kept expanding, and it kept its shape. Buildings I had visited were still there when I came back, and a place I’d seen once turned up again, continuing to connect to others. At some point, I stopped treating it as a series of dreams and started treating it as a geography.

That’s the origin of everything you’ll find here.
